OUTDOOR RETREAT - A retreat to the outdoors any time of day, built to last the test of the elements in timeless style. The client, an accomplished Architect, desired a durable yet poetic space. The screen porch is designed to be the identically sized twin to a future family room. The family room will eventually be built at the opposite end of the deck, utilizing all Andersen gliding windows. The screen porch uses stock sized Andersen gliding window screens, removable if ever damaged.

The project program included the following:

Create new outdoor deck space with overhead trellis to filter the hot sun
Build a freestanding screen porch with the quality of a family room
Utilize as many "maintenance free" products as possible
Allow for the eventual construction of the all glass family room

The IPE decking was sealed with clear penetrating oil and fastened using concealed stainless steel fasteners. The trellis cover element was built using western red cedar, sealed with opaque solid white stain. Woodway pre-assembled deckrail panels (also western red cedar) add a refined furniture appearance to the deck. The screen porch was enclosed using aluminum screens, with custom screen stops made from laminated AZEK material. The porch entry door is Combination Wood Door Company's traditional storm door with removable screen. All concealed structural members are CCA treated yellow pine.

The solid lower panels of the porch have a paneled look often utilized for interior applications, consisting of ¾" AZEK trim boards, James Hardie cement flat panels and Marley Mouldings PVC base cap. The porch posts and headers are clad with ¾" AZEK trim material. Hipped roof rafters and girders are constructed from western red cedar topped sheathed with one layer of 3/8" Georgia Pacific Ply-Bead & one layer of 5/8" CDX plywood. GAF Timberline fiberglass roofing shingles match the main house.

The finished project is a picture perfect space that has the atmosphere of several indoor rooms integrating well with the existing house. Several neighbors have been impressed with the quality and durability of the project and have hired the builder to construct similarly detailed decks, trellis' and porches. The client was extremely satisfied (see attached letter) and enthusiastically looks forward to future projects. The project utilized nearly all of the AZEK 1 x 6 inventories from the local building supplier. Curious executives at AZEK sent a product representative to the job site to see what was being built with the large quantities of material. The amazed representative took several photos to be later used in a product brochure for AZEK as well as a future advertisement in JLC and Remodeling magazines.
